Ameyoko market PHOTO BY TARO FUJIMOTO

Shoppers crowd Ameyoko market in Ueno on Monday afternoon. The area used to be a black market after World War II, but is now famous for cheap food and clothing items. Ameyoko is always crowded at the end of the year as shoppers prepare for New Year celebrations.

The pedestrians on the Okachimachi side won't even move at this time of year.

Ueno and Asakusa are probably my favourite parts of Tokyo - I always loved browsing through Ameyoko, even with the huge crowds. The history of it is great too....

This area is fun to walk, and I even take Japanese here because most have never seen it. Kind of like how many people haven't been to their local Chinatown.

I stumbled across it when I first came to Japan, what an interesting place, I was blown away, more people in this one place that the whole of my home town.

THIS is the kind of pic that should always make pic of the day. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the odd frontal shot of 'chesty girl accidentally bends over to pick something up' that grace this site, but this Ameyoko market pic is really the kind of cultural/seasonal/Japanese thing that should be focused on. Good job.

I wound up there completely by accident during my first trip to Tokyo 8 years ago, and had a wonderful afternoon. A definite must-see part of the city.
