Does this really still go on?

Yes, and a group in Ebisu thinks they can attract foreign tourists by offering whale meat. Maybe after the technological singularity androids will gather to watch humans do tricks for them.

Just as Mother Nature intended.

What bothers me more is that Halloween is being so readily adopted by Japan.

I'm out of touch, I thought Halloween is at the end of the month?

Time to end this outdated way of treating wild animals.

Excellent training provided by the trainer to sea lion to maintain balance with a Halloween painted ball to the delight of all viewers . Good photo by Yuya Shino.

Many party poopers are here too.

Yeah halloween is really taking off in recent years in Japan.
Just don't ride the trains in central Tokyo wearing a costume though. They aint grasped it that much yet.
Western festivals in Japan….alll flash with no substance whatsoever.

This has got to stop. USA does not celebrate Tanabata. But, Halloween is a lot of fun for adults and childrren. Adults without children can door to door and enjoy a drink with friends; and children can enjoy going door to door or just dressing up in their favorite hero's costume and collect candy. Trick or Treat. Happy Halloween.

Why does it have to stop?

'Western festivals in Japan….alll flash with no substance whatsoever.'
American children and adults wearing Mickey Mouse ears or Batman costumes has 'substance'?

"It doesn't matter. Whatever Japan does has got to stop!"

I really don't get why people are so bothered about Japan celebrating Halloween. I mean, at the end of the day, whether it's Halloween or Tanabata or your local community festival, the night ends with the adults drunk and kids passed out on candy.
Peace Out
I don't know what is wrong with Halloween. Its not like I can think of one Japanese festival or holiday tradition worth passing on. Japan adopted Christmas and is adopting Halloween for good reasons. They are fun for the whole family and fun for people of all ages. So many Japanese holidays are just focused on specific groups, Shichigosan, kids/boy's day, girl's day, old people's day and Obon is for the dead. New Years you go stand in a huge line to freeze and wait to pretend to pray. Blah. Bland. And Japanese people know it.
Japan has some good points of culture worth keeping sure. But importing holidays/ festivals is a good move.
