Autumn in Nikko

Autumn in Nikko

Autumn foliage brightens up the grounds of Tosho-gu, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu in Nikko. Parts of the shrine are designated National Treasures of Japan and Important Cultural Properties.

Nice, but I have to wonder whether color saturation was added during the editing.

      Nothing was added during editing.

Japan can be an absolutely beautiful place at times. This is a nice picture. I hope to go out and see a few nice leaf viewing spots, but it depends on the crowds.

most beautiful autumn in japan. hope for a sunny weekend to see this with my own eyes.

Beautiful! Autumn is the one season I haven't experienced in Japan.

@JeffLee - if the saturation was increased, the grass would look unnaturally green, and it doesn't. Japanese maples really do look bright red sometimes - especially if backlit by a bright sky.

I agree. Autumn in Japan is amazing. Best weather, not crowded anywhere you go, amazing colors and the sense of "melancholy" that creates such a bittersweet taste about the meaning of life, etc.

Agree, autumn in Japan is beautiful. I tried to visit Nikko at least every other year during the fall. Simply spectacular. Especially if you get lucky and it snows on the mountain tops. Nikko, IMO, is the epitome of what Japan's great history and culture are all about. (Although saying Nikko is "not crowded" in the fall is a bit of a stretch. Seems like Toshogu was full of groups with their little flags.)

    not crowded anywhere you go,

Big call there, Antonios! The locals in this joint - especially the hordes of oldies - just love the Autumn "changing colour leaves"! I've almost had to fight my way past the hordes in some places! I love spring and summer here best, but yes Autumn is very photogenic.

The fact that most of the trees in Nikko are evergreen means that these flashes of color are all the more dramatic. Just beautiful.

@the_harper: most image editing software allows for adjusting the saturation of individual colors independently, so the reds could be bumped up without affecting the greens. That's not to say the photographer did that in this case.

Remember going there for a school trip. It is a very lovely place.

Love Nikko any time, but autumn is spectacular. @ cactusJack - don't you mean ONLY Japan has four seasons? That's what I've been hearing for over 20 years so it must be true.

I've seen Nikko in autumn only once, I hope to see it again someday, probably not this year though.
