Japan has been at the leading edge in robotics for a long time now, but Google's Boston Dynamics lab is about to leave Asimo the ball-kicking toy in the dust with their Atlas robot.

I don't know if "Japan has been at the leading edge for a long time" is a wholly accurate statement.
Google bought their robot division from DARPA which has been making pretty impressive robots for some time.
I've also seen other robots that are more like "body parts" that can do some pretty impressive stuff, build in American Uni;s.
I think Asimo is special because he's got "some" skills but he's more built to look like a human.
Form over Function, not an entirely foreign idea in Japan.
