Foreign visitors might wonder whether its retail, wholesale or auction sales.

I myself have been drawn by these stalls, and have on several occasions bought from this specific one. 1000 yen for a plastic bag full of chocolates and cookies.

The man in the yellow is saying "Who wants to get fat?" . Processed, junkfood like that should be given away for free... I'd turn up to a bargain sale of healthy, fresh fruit and veggies.

These barkers are probably shaving close to the "Sell Before" date.

Ameyoko's (Ame) means candy. After the war, there were about 100 shops selling candy made from the starch of sweet potatoes. Sugar itself was very scarce those days. The place was called Ameya Yokochou. Then later, the Americans were selling black market goods there so it was also called Amerika Yokochou. After that the names merged to become just Ameyoko. There was a fire in 1981 which burned most of the place to ashes.

As "cactusJack" said above, these guys are probably flirting with the "sell before" date. I've watched the selling action here many times. The sweets are indeed cheap ... but before you pay your money, check the "sell before" date. You'll probably end up putting the money back in your pocket ...

I like Ameyoko, and now here in Tokyo, it is was on the few places that really has character, kind of the flavor of gone by years, way before I came to Japan, maybe after the war etc..EDOKO, real Tokyo downtown folk, seem to really enjoy this place too, not just tourists and tv cameras. I also dig that panda hat, I want to go to China for some reason and make sure I do not forget my panda hat.
