This move is a free transfer from Moscow's CSKA (which he joined in 2010), after starting at Grampus Eight and then transferring to the Dutch team VVV Venlo in 2008. At 27, he has definitely reached his sell-by date, and, in fact, may soon be off the shelves.

I wasn't criticizing, I just plain didn't know since I haven't been following the story.

The free transfer is nothing to do with quality or being past his sell-by date. He left 'on a Bosnan' after refusing to sign a new contract with CSKA Moscow, who refused to let him transfer to AC Milan a year or so ago. CSKA lost out on this deal. Most clubs would cash in one year before a player's contract expires. When a contract expires players become free agents.
