    To me it looks like Picasso Artwork, difficult to understand and therefore difficult to appreciate.

    At least in the foreground, there are no special skills from what I see. I think most Japanese have really lost their art sense with calligraphy. Nothing is flowing there. Plain hard brush strokes.

    I think people are being a bit harsh, I'd like to see them write as beautifully when they were that age.

    I think any 10 yr old kids from Hong Kong, Taiwan or mainland China can do better than that

    @ oberst - I think you are right - but you have to remember those kids in the other nations have had a head start on Kanji, which is why they are better at it than Japanese kids of that age. I think they look pretty nice - I'd hang any of them on my wall!

    So are different grades given a different phrase to write, based on the kanji they would have been expected to have learned by then?

    It would be embarrassing for the Han race if they were bested in their own language by the Japanese who couldn't come up with their own text.
