Coming-of-Age Day

Coming-of-Age Day

Men and women who have turned 20 or will turn 20 this year, the traditional age of adulthood in Japan, celebrate with Disney characters on stage during a Coming-of-Age ceremony at Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, on Monday. Despite the snow and rain, more than 1,200 young adults attended the festivities.

They post this picture every year. The residents of Urayasu city in Chiba hold their coming of age day ceremony at Disneyland, which is in Urayasu city and a place Chiba-ites are extremely proud of. I wouldn't go, but then I'd miss out celebrating becoming an adult with my childhood friends. I don't blame them for being there.

I always like this day, hordes of young people in beautiful kimono's and young men in suits or traditional dress.

But it's time the age was lowered to 18 years.

20 is a bit old for Mickey and Minnie IMHO.

Nothing says "Welcome to adulthood" like a party with Mickey and Minnie...

    Zichi, agreed.

I think a case could be made that the average 20 year old, of most countries, is probably less mature than they were 50 years ago. For example, I've read that lots of women in their 30's in the US are really into wearing 'Hello Kitty' stuff.

Let them have their fun. They are not bothering anyone.

Whoever wrote that "fact" must have spent the day at a store selling Hello Kitty merchandise. I can honestly say I haven't seen anyone in this area (except for kids) with Hello Kitty merchandise. Maybe there's a Hello Kitty cult near the author's residence?

If 20 is the age of adulthood, then what is the age of moving out of mom and dad's house? 30'ish?

it just wouldnt be a "traditional" japanese event without the appearence of a disney character. mental age aside, happy coming of age day

I agree zichi, it's such a lovely time of year! Another wonderful time is in November, when the little ones are taken out for 7-5-3. Kimono is just so beautiful. I really appreciate the reverence that the Japanese have for their national costume.

Love the kimono but am not getting the mice at all.

in any case.. 7-5-3 stuff is cute for the kids but for "adults" ?

should take them to the 'rippers or a night in Macao for a real coming of age

Maybe. But I don't think so.

I see so many women in their 30s walking around in Hello Kitty sh-t and nobody is concerned for them," Theron said. "It's the one iconic teenage symbol that seems okay for women in their 30s? The world seems to not have an issue with it."

Personally, if it makes the individual happy, I see nothing wrong with posing with Mickey and Minnie for a photo.

They are not Japanese young adults! They are terrestrial young adults.
