I have been to Miyajima many times and have always found the island to be a very peaceful place. If you get there early in the day, I strongly recommend a hike up the trail to the top of the mountain and then take the tram down.

Just watch your stuff around the waterfront tourist when you get mobbed by the deer as the little buggers can at times become overly 'curious' and poke their noses into low hanging bags and purses. One thought it had found a snack in my wife's shoulder bag and bit into her Nexus 7 tablet but luckily the flip case took the brunt of the bite pressure saving the screen from being shattered. That deer must not have had breakfast that day I reckon.

Hilarious! I was about to also recommend walking up Misen-yama and taking the cable car down too! The views are amazing and I loved the hike!

Also sometimes the deer are on the trail even up the mountain so you have to keep your wits about you

What are the odds that none of them actually knew about or appreciated what they were witnessing???

They're totally ruining their slacks.
