Defense drill

Members of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force 1st Airborne Brigade take part in an annual new year military exercise at Narashino exercise field in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, on Sunday. About 500 soldiers and 19 aircraft conducted an island defense display based on a scenario of countering a military invasion of Japanese islands.

I think they should go back to camouflage 101. I think all those little clumps of green in the background could be troops.

Some of those bushes have knees.

"Japan and the West would collapse as societies within a month if trade with China were stopped."

And exactly how long would China survive???

Are you thinking that China is the ONLY self-sufficient country out there?!

more forest on their helmets than on the ground. Like a school play with movable scenery

This is why they need to water the lawns a little more, or else just make the camouflage to match the reality of the place -- dirt parks and dry grass.

Soldiers suspended by rope are an easy target. Almost carnivalesque.

I think they should go back to infantry tactics 101. Look @how bunched-up those 3 are. On the move, troops need to keep some dispersion among themselves. Otherwise enemy snipers could easily hit targets so conveniently near each other.

And if an HE (high explosive) projectile launched from a grenade launcher hit within a 5 meter radius, of those 3, they might all be killed.

Training for the Abe Peoples' Army.

That's an armchair general or career pogue's, someone who doesn't understand spatial distortions that come about from photographs, perspective.

Look at the photo of them "SPIE-Rigging." A military exercise waaay too "high-tech" for SDF, now there's some perspective.

Well, poor choice of words by the author - this is not a "military exercise", this is a "military performance" - as all of these annual drills the JSDF do to showcase their skills and market themselves. They tactics displayed are more for "show" than "realism".

I can tell you that the JSDF are extremely well trained and have very good equipment. They only lack actual combat experience. I think any opponent that decides to challenge or underestimates them is in for a big surprise.

Oh yeah, the sake-fueled Bonzai Charges. Beware!

No, I think it's more the F-15J fighters, Aegis class destroyers, and Soryu class submarines - all first tier. JMSDF's submarine force is in the Top 5 worldwide (US, UK, France, Germany, Japan) and would be a "game changer" in any maritime conflict, especially since all their potential opponents lack any real ASW capability.
