I like the bemused expression on the Emperor's face. What is he thinking?

Or maybe it's an amused expression.

The problem is the ordinary Diet. What we need is an extraordinary Diet.

The Diet actually achieving something, especially in Tohoku and Fukushima would be called an extraordinary Diet, but most likely we'll just get more of the same.
Following the 3/11 disaster I would have thought that all the political parties united to overcome all the very serious problems.
I suppose, it was just too much to hope for?

You're looking at the reason behind the once mighty Japan is failing fast.
It is run by people who cannot think independently and they attach way too much attention to stuffy outdated protocol. In addition to selfishness, lack of empathy and corruption that is.
They should try to emulate Australia, I think the Aussie's have the most disciplined and talented government (an d no, I am not Australian either).
Their national debt is only 5% of GDP verses Japan's which is around 125% GDP...

If a political party changes its leadership and therefore the PM and government and also is not doing what it said it would be do in its election campaign, there should be a general election within 6 months of the new leader being elected. The present government and the previous one are unelected.

They are checking that the brown envelopes are out of sight. And if their shoes are actually on the right foot.

Emperor Akihito has alwayed seemed much more normal and relateable than I would have expected from someone who's spent his entire life in a gilded cage. Respect for the Emperor is still so deeply ingrained in Japanese society, it's not like other countries where people joke about their monarchy or openly call for it to be abolished. Criticise the monarchy in Japan and you're at risk from being attacked by right wing hoodlums. Scary. It's probably because he's essentially a religious figure ('a direct descendent of the Gods') as much as he is a monarchical one.
