People shop for discounted canned food at Matsuzakaya department store in Ueno on Friday. The store is currently holding a so-called “breakdown sale,” selling unsold new year gift products for 20-50% off. The bargain sale will run through next Tuesday, and about 50,000 people are expected to visit to store.

Nothing wrong with a bit of canned food. I just wonder which "New Year" we are talking about.

I my years in Japan, this is the first time I've heard about this 'new year set break down' or have seen any coverage of such sales. Does this mean that not enough of these packs were sold for the new year - more so than usual? Is this just another indication of the financial problems that Japan is beginning to suffer?

I've never heard such a breakdown sale 20-50% off. People really try not to buy things as many as they used to and will rather try to save money, probably average people have deep anxiety about business, layoffs, economy, etc.

Matsuzakaya would have done their image a lot of good by distributing the unwanted, returned food products to the homeless. But, I guess this is Japan and charity shouldn't get in the way of profit, no matter how small.
