The only gals I see in my neck of the woods wearing kimonos are at least sixty years old.

Where do these kimono wearing model types hang out?

like the new format for the POD.

Kimonos have been part of Japanese culture for hundreds of years. They will not and should not change, or be sexied up like Mrs. Ligron tried to do. That's more like Quentin Tarantino's job.

Wait till New Year, there'll be a good number strolling round the big shrines and temples. (Not as many as in past years, though). And then you get all the new 20-year-olds dolled up in the gear for Coming-of-Age Day in January.

You don't see many people normally wearing kimono because, although they're pretty and traditional and part of the culture and all that, they simply don't fit in with modern society - too expensive, too restrictive, too uncomfortable, too time-consuming.

They'll gradually go the way of the sword and the topknot, in spite of being pretty. As will the cultural tradition of eating marine mammals, which isn't pretty at all.

If you want young gals in kimono, I recommend fireworks festivals. Good for yutaka too, and miniskirts.

Seeing anyone in a Kimono is so traditional & with the variations of colours as most are in cotton, not the original silk in layers------it is still so beautiful.

The 'belt' (sorry wrong name I cannot remember) in so many cases is more costly then the rest of the kimono & how they get it on is simply beyond me unless they have the help of someone else.

Always beautiful for sure. Also many Americans that have spent some yrs in Japan have purchased one, as well. Yes the kimono on them is lovely as well.

So the Kimono is for wedding, to tradational things & that is fine to my eyes if not beautiful. I saw a colour photo of 4 oe 5 girls in late teens, all of different patterns/colours & they looked lovely.

Lastly a nice photgraph on Japan Today.

    I recommend fireworks festivals.

Those aren't kimonos, those are yukatas. Still cute though.

I designed a mini skirt kimono. Girls loved it. ...and guys too.

...but a shame that things like kimono relate so little to how people live in modern japan now. need to build a modern identity for yourself as well...

Huh? I guess you're implying that Japanese people are hanging on to an image of themselves that is no longer relevant?

Kimonos are very much a part of modern Japan. Go to a wedding, you'll see guests wearing Kimonos alongside people in suits, western dresses, etc.

Most Japanese women I know wear one whenever they have a chance.

Nice. And no doubt more Japanese women would wear kimonos if they know how to put them on themselves. Merely putting on a kimono requires instruction. This will always prevent the kimono from being more than just a beautiful piece of tradional Japanese garb worn on "occasions".

    beautiful furisode

very aesthetical except the hair, it is a non no hairstyle for kimono.

  • Ke11iente at 11:34 PM JST - 6th November

Anyone know where I can see more pics of this event? Possible nationalistic narcissism aside, I just like looking at pictures of pretty ladies in kimono.

  • Dewaashita at 08:25 AM JST - 8th November

I love kimono. Could we see more men in traditional dress, as well, please?
