Would have thought fuel tanks in the ground would've been contaminated with sea water.

With that earthquake & failure in the nuke electrica supply, it is not surprising that some of the underground petrol tanks do not have normal electrical pumps to bring up the petrol. It is definately a very, very interesting photo & shows how some people are using their brains.

The days of hand pumping up the petrol into a special glass container eyed by the owner or one to collecting the money is a thing that went away back in the mid-50s here in North American to also Canada.

To reduce the fuel queues behind this car - they should bring over Lance Armstrong to man the bicycle-pump!

One little spark, and it would be over for them. However, having hand-pumped gas out a closed gas station myself, I can say that a plastic hand pump works just fine. And no risk.

Who knows, this may be a familiar scene across Japan in the future. Maybe we'll all have to do this to generate our own electricity too!

Where there is a will there is a way! Probably very little water got into the tanks as the vents are normally a few metres up off the ground and the water would sink to the bottom anyway so, as long as the intake pipe is not too low they will be OK.

If anything good can come from this disaster it will be Japanese alternative energy inventions

The seat is way too low for efficient pedalling, anyone who uses a bicycle much knows this.
