I hope it's nothing prophetic. I saw the pic and thought we had yet another airline accident.

  • 0

    IfeelImust

A double whammy for air pollution!

I thought I had seen a photograph very similar to this before, perhaps even here on JapanToday.

However, I googled 'JAL factory' and easily found the article I saw before with a photo that is almost a copy of this one.

That must be the same smokestack and just a different model aircraft flying by. The photo is even from the same source: Reuters. The photographer probably took many photos that day for Reuters.

Moderator: The photo was taken on Tuesday.

It reminds me of September 11th bad taste for photographer and JT. 9 years after 9/11/2001 I still feel uneasy when I take a plane flight. It will be always on my mind when I arrive at the airport, plane takeoff and landing and departing the airport.

Bad taste JT !!!! Totally bad !!!!

    koiwaicoffee

    This picture is mean, really.

  • 0

    smartacus

I don't see anything wrong with the photo. It certainly doesn't imply a plane crash to me. And whiskeysour, if you are trying to link it to 9/11, then your post is in bad taste.

The photographer probably waited for a while until he could get that shot. Maybe it is meant to symbolize all the troubles that JAL has right now.

I think it's sensitive to some group those who have bad experience with air crash. Good symbolic picture but surely bad taste. The credit goes to Reuters.

An airplane and a chimney with fire people. Dont exagerate.

smartacus - show this picture during this month to one of the family members from 9/11 or in a new york newspaper and see how much excitement will you get.

Obiviously this picture is used for shock value and to arouse comments.

    paulinusa

Yea yea, JAL going up in flames, pretty clumsy if you ask me.

  • 0

    susano

oh whiskeysour.... get off it.... there were many many terrorist attacks before 911 involving planes, and the US has shot down civilian airliners... you are the recipient of mindless US media...

  • 0

    Triumvere

Woah. For a minute there I thought we had another Challenger on our hands.

  • 0

    sugamosumo

nice one. taking JAL for a flight in a couple of weeks, too...

If you are shocked, emotionally distressed or spurred to think (and then post a comment on an internet news website) about a photograph (art) such as this one and its potential meaning(s) then it has ‘fulfilled’ one of the intents of the photographer or artist.

Ilustrates air pollution very well, all that crap we're buring into the atmosphere.

While the photography is good the selection of this picture is somewhat tactless. They could have selected a picture that has an actual factory smokestack in the foreground. Yes, that isn't a factory smokestack. It's a part of an oil refinery used to burn gases left over from the refining process. Why they don't collect the gas and use it is unknown to me. Maybe because it has low calorific value therefore doesn't burn as well as current fuels.

at a moment i thought it was another 9/11....

    You should have stopped there.

Whiskeysour - you shouldnt have even started.

    Nice photo.

Looks like the Japan Airlines aircraft is being all burnt up. I am glad that it is not true.

  • 0

    gogogo

    A little bit inconsiderate IMO

  • 0

    WilliB

    Poor taste.

If Reuters published this picture, either they are baka and can't see the obvious or its an attempt to discredit JAL. I think the latter because these medias have tons of fact checkers and image checkers before they do anything. Nothing gets published without lots of review. In my opinion the editors know what they did and JAL should nto stand for it.
