Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, followed by Crown Prince Naruhito and Prince Akishino, walk to a crowd of guests at the annual garden party at the Akasaka Imperial Garden in Tokyo on Thursday. Around 1,800 guests attended the event. Crown Princess Masako was unable to attend.

I'd love to see a who's who list of the guests. It would give a precise idea of who really owns Japan.

One was that old guy who climbed Mount Everest - I'm sure he owns a pretty hefty chunk of Japan. Buwahahaha.

Once again, Masako is kept in her prison. How much of a strain would it have been for her to go to a garden party, bow, shake some hands and smile at people?

Obviously a great strain, or she would have attended. It's hardly in the Household's interest to have her so conspicuous by her absence. She must have real problems with appearing in public - especially such a large crowd as this one.

Guests are more likely a variety of Royal relatives. I doubt very much sandwiches are served. Must be Japanese cuisine. After all Royals never had to toil as employees that I doubt very much they know what is sadwich. Kunaicho must have selected guests carefully. Not big mouth sportmen or politicians I'd bet. Only elegant people who can enjoy royal party. I think Princess skipped this party to enjoy her freedom. Skipped to meet 1800 well wisher guests. She did not want to memorize phrases to meet 1800 people, I;d bet. Irassahimase and domo Arigato are not in royal conversation - that are for commoners. I's bet she does not know how deeply to bow to 1800 guests.
