Pretty!

wait till they drop the smelly fruits ( unless they are smart enough to plant only the " male " trees )

The fruits do have a musky smell...sort of like s-e-x

The leaves are pretty but the fruits smell like vomit. I don't know what benjamin franklin was thinking when he decided to have these trees planted all over then downtown Philadelphia. Which is Olde City now. Pretty but smelly fruits.

It's been a while since I lived in Tokyo, can someone remind me what the buliding is in the distance?

kaminarioyaji : I think Meiji Jingu Gaien Outer Gardens, Kita Aoyama, Shinjuku. If so, the building would be the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery.

Beautiful. One year we collected the nuts (with gloves on!) and roasted them over a campfire (it was with English Adventure). Delicious and fabulous memories of Autumn.

I love Gingko trees the most in autumn, their yellow colour is just perfect.

Would be nice to put Christmas decorations on them also, as they have in Roppongi and other areas.

Worked for four years or so at a company with their offices right near this spot. Always looked forward to this time of year and walked over there as often as I could at lunch to see these trees. One of the truly "naturally" beautiful sights in Tokyo.

LED lights and decorations ^_^

Woah, so beautiful, trees here stand without leaves for already month or two. Bright colors anywhere, but not in Russia...

Went there on Sunday - crowded as heck!

Beautiful trees though.

That building down the end isn't what you think it is. :-)

Laughing all the way to the gingko.

Whatever you call it, it looks like a maiden's hair to me.

Very pretty, but have you ever smelt the fruit? Olden stinkos!

Smell like vomit? More like dog poop...the nastiest dog poop you ever smelled. That is just the meat of the fruit though. The seed is good and edible and doesn't stink. Its called ginnan and its in your chawanmushi.

I don't know what benjamin franklin was thinking when he decided to have these trees planted all over then downtown Philadelphia.

Some stories about him make me think his olfactory system did not work. But this tree is unique with no close relatives and is tough as nails. Ginko biloba trees got burned crispy in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, yet they survived, healed completely are still alive to this day! The trees are also beautiful and produce an edible seed. I should think all those positive qualities would make a man like Franklin over-look the little negative of stinking fruit in the fall.

There used to be a webcam online that showed this very scene... Flet's Tokyo Street Cam. It's been offline for maybe a year now - I miss it.

Walk through the University of Tokyo's campus one of these days -- the gingkos are jsut as beautiful and the crowds are smaller.

I guess so if you think sex smells like vomit. Perhaps it depends on the variety, of gingko that is.

It's apparently the same variety planted in Central Park. I had to commend the brave souls sorting through the muck to get the gin nuts. I would have needed a full respirator.
