German President Christian Wulff, right, plants a tree with Crown Prince Naruhito during a German festival at Arisugawa Memorial Park in Tokyo on Sunday.

    A money tree?

What kind of tree was it?

Ridiculous toy shovels, too. And Naruhito needs to sit down for this?

It's a German lime tree. They panted together a Japanese cherry in Germany in summer and this is the reciprocal tree.

Thanks Johannes. Can we expect the next episodes of Lindenstrasse to be here in Japan as a nice twist?

Their spades are not dirty, did they magically plant it?

You call that a tree? Some dude on a moped could easily runneth that over.

This "tree" won't be providing shade anytime soon.

    a lot of snide remarks.

seems like some of you have too much time on your hands...

    NICE TREE!

Mine wasn't a snide remark, ubikwit. That' is a pathetic looking tree. I'm no tree expert, but if that was a German Lime Tree, I think they could have found a better, more mature tree to plant rather than a weed.

It's just a young one, which had been transported by plane. Furthermore, the imagery is that the tree should grow like the German-Japanese relations. Starting big wouldn't look like much progress is possible. And the event was actually quite nice, even though they had not enough vendors. A good memorial event which brought back plenty of personal memories from March. Both speeches were rather good.

The hole was probably prepared beforehand and they just put in the tree and fill it up with soil. Still, it is a nice gesture. Much better than military parades or similar nonsense.

Gee, it seems that some people don't know about those new stick free shovels. They work just like Teflon and kep my shed clean.

Looks like an upside down cat of nine tails punk being buried.

The Prince could have at least stood up while smashing down the dirt with his tiny little shovel.

At least he's doing it with the royal family. If he did it with any politician, he would earn a lot of frequent flyer miles with those twice-yearly trips...

Much better than military parades or similar nonsense.

Basil Fawlty's first rule "Don't mention the war".

    Nice symbolism.
