American actor Richard Gere, 59, poses with a statue of Hachiko in Shibuya on Tuesday. The story of the dog Hachiko has been transplanted to America in the upcoming Hollywood version, titled “Hachiko: A Dog’s Story,” which is a remake of the 1987 film “Hachiko Monogatari.” The original story of the Akita dog, which in the 1920s and 1930s waited for his master at Shibuya station for nearly a decade after his death, starred Tatsuya Nakadai, and earned more than 4 billion yen at theaters across Japan. The new film starring Gere and Joan Allen, set in Rhode Island, will be dubbed into Japanese with actor Kinya Kitaoji, 66, and actress Miki Maya, 45, lending their voices. The Japanese title is “Hachi, Yakusoku no Inu.” It opens in Japan on Aug 8.

I've heard that the dog "Hachiko" came and waited for his master at Shibuya station for many years because many people eating food at restaurants around the station fed Hachiko everyday. That's why the dog came down to the Station. I think the dog already forgot his master after death.

When Hachiko was dead, veterinarians opened the stomach of the dog to find out what cause of death. They found many food in his stomach that people fed. The cause was just nature of death.

Hachiko was 12 years old when he died; that's a ripe old age for a large breed, especially in the 1930s. It don't take no vet to guess that Hachiko died of old age.

The dog "Hachiko" was very famous at the time. After death people made a stuffed specimen for memorial, but it was destroyed during the war. So they made the statue of the dog for that.

no one knows what the dog was waiting for or if it was even waiting. Could have been waiting for that bit of tail that walked passed everyday for 10 years or could have seen the place as its own territory. assuming it was waiting for its master is lame and arrogant as a human.

I heard that the stuffed specimen was destroyed during the war. I just wonder how it survived. Everything was burned by Tokyo Air Raid. I go check it.

I heard the original brass statue of Hachiko was melted down to shell/bullet casings for the war effort. What you see today is a copy of the original statue.
