I didn't think Halloween had become that big...

It has gotten bigger because of the edutainment that Japanese children get in their school's connected with English classes. Business types are just taking advantage of it.

Christmas is right around the corner too, you can expect to start seeing Christmas displays probably around the beginning of October.

Halloween has indeed become a "thing" here in Japan... mainly because the current generation doesn't really care about any domestic holidays from after Obon to about Christmas.

Sure, there are holidays..but the young generation when I ask them has no interest or really a clue about whatever holidays come up...because they're all working or at school. Hard to be excited about a holiday when A) it has no personal meaning B) You don't get vacation time and/or C) You don't really "do" anything to celebrate it.

At the very least, Halloween is exciting because it gives people an excuse to party and dress silly.

Forget about Halloween. Can we have Xmas decorations NOW. I can't stand the wait.

With few exceptions, Japanese tend more toward accepting anything from foreign countries. Yes, Halloween is one of them. Nice picture!

Halloween is now second only to Christmas among the most popular "imported" festivals. But it has actually become a giant cosplay event. Last year at the Shibuya crossing, there were tens of thousands of people in costumes and they weren't going to any parties. They were just gathering for the fun of it in true cosplay style.

It's a far cry from when I first came to Japan in the 1980s. Then, the main Halloween event was a bunch of foreigners in costume riding the Yamanote line in Tokyo.

Anyway, it's still too hot for me to think about Halloween.

Yeah, but it's supposed to be scary. Not "kawaii". . . . And when will they throw decent Halloween Parties? Haunted House? Trick or Treaters in the malls? Kids @ school- teachers- don't dress up, so it's not all that popular and accepted.

Actually Daiso offers pretty good Halloween stuff for decorating and stickers. I generally do Daiso for decorations, Costco for the candy, flower shop for the pumpkin and party favors from Dollar Tree/99cents Only Store from back home.

Mix kosupure with trick-or-treat and you wind up with a huge windfall for the merchants. It's a blatant pitch for people to spend money, and they fall for it. Sigh.

So is this picture promoting Daiso.

Halloween is a great festival! I cannot blame the Japanese for adopting it. However, what they have done with it is HORRIBLE as is what they have failed to do with it. This is a case in point. By the time Halloween comes around, I will already be sick of Halloween, as I have been looking at the merchandise for two months already. Same with Christmas. There should be a law against this.

The exception being "people".

With the exception being people. Japanese like the party and fun but dont want to deal with the people who traditionally celebrate them being here on a permanent basis.
