And with this going oN, I'm supposed to shiver with "warm biz" because we need to save electricity? No bloody way!

100million n U won?
@gifu Totally agree.
Sure LED lights don't use as much electricity, but the J-govt can suck it if they think we should cut electricity usage.
Tell ya what, I'll cut my electricity as soon as imported products start reflecting the actual exchange rate.

As winter approaches many cultures use light to ward off the increasing darkness. It's a creative and defiant act humans have optimized since using fire to survive the Ice Ages. It's probably part of our DNA.
Light-up is a sparkling seasonal affair in many cities and gardens of Japan. Its positive effect on the economy is obvious. People come out of their homes, frequent restaurants, department stores and shops while being cheered up by the brightness. People have to have something to get through the winter's gloom with positive emotions intact.
Rather than protesting light-up, why not look for counter-measures that would enhance its effect? People could regularly turn all lights except for the rooms being used during the winter. Turn off all appliances that don't need to run, office lights, and passive users such as instant-on TVs.
Urge all public buildings and businesses to turn off or lower their interior lighting to minimums required for safety. Restrict advertising to odd and even numbered days of the month according to their street addresses. Even half-lit Tokyo would be brighter than most cities. Communities could get together and look for ways to enhance and measure their conservation tactics as well as look for creative ways to stay warm.
I say turn on light-up. Turn off something else.

What's the deal with japanese and lights? They seem to adore them, and anything needs bright, flashy lights to be successful..

Awesome shots. They certainly love their Christmas down there in Kobe, that's for sure!

Beautiful! Shouldn't they be using those curly bulbs instead? You know, the ones that will save the planet...

Nothing says Christmas better than pink LED flamingos and Jim Carrey's rendition of "Cuban Pete" from the Mask.

You will never cut your electricity usage then. Just shiver and shush, ha ha!
This electricity to run this great illuminage for a few weeks is a drop in the bucket compared with all the electricity used in pachinko parlors all year.

"Those curly bulbs" use much more electricity than LEDs.
