The space shuttle Discovery blasts off at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday night. The seven-man crew includes Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, 45, who is making his third space flight. During his three-month stay at the international space station, Wakata is to build and maintain the Japanese space lab, Kibo.

Cool. Shuttle night launch. Someone at Firefox should make a browser with this theme.

This is great and beautiful. I wonder how much CO2 the launch made every time?

"the international space station"
So far it's not looking anything like the space station in "2001: A Space Odyssey." But it's still fantastic!
"wonder how much CO2 the launch made"
I hear with every launch, the shuttle punches another hole in the ozone layer...

Thanks to JT for putting up a high-resolution image that richly deserves it.

Given the technological needs here on Earth, manned space missions at this point in history are pretty much a complete waste of time and money.
