Picture of the Day ( 14 )
A woman walks by a poster showing one of the 12 Heavenly Generals of Yakushi (Medicine) Buddha kept at Shin-Yakushi-ji Buddhist temple in Nara, at a subway station in Tokyo. The poster is part of a tourism campaign for Nara, which last year celebrated the 1,300th anniversary of its birth as Japan’s ancient capital.

One might be apt to think that an image like that would be prone to have a negative effect on tourists.

That would be a shame, because this particular collection of statues is really remarkable, and well worth visiting Nara to see.

i bet the woman in the pic has no idea who the statue is, or even know that it is japanese...

I think she knows unless she hasn't watched TV for the last few weeks.
Many TV-ads for that exhibit, etc. where they show the figures as they are now and how the looked originally(as seen on poster).
Similar figures/statues, etc are also common at entrances to buddhist temples, etc as guardians.

Both wearing too much white foundation.

Like I said in another post, getting an o-mamori at Yakushiji is probably a better idea than getting a flu shot. At least you won't be poisoning yourself for no reason!

They should have one of these by the priority seating spots on every train. "I've told you till I'm blue in the face--TURN OFF YOUR DAMNED PHONE!" hehe...

The picture looks like an image of a devil himself.

Nice picture. But the 12 Heavenly Generals of Yakushi are almost never shown independently :-O They are generally grouped in a protective circle around the Yakushi Nyorai.

If that's a Heavenly General, I'd hate to see a Hellish General.

Why 12 generals? An interesting number.
