Ah, the traditional Noh drama of displaying exhaustion because you have a job.
I'll lay you a pound to a penny it never crossed his mind to go home to bed before 10pm and get some real rest in a bed, though.
No, far more satisfying to put on the performance for a viewing audience. You never know, his boss might walk past, see a man drained of life and spirit, way past the point at which any effective thought might occur, and say "Now that's the kind of get-up-and-go we need in senior management".

Is it my imagination, or is the knee on his trouser worn thin? Won't speculate on how that happened.

That phone is perfectly placed, just in case of an emergency call from work..

He's not exhausted because he's working so hard. He's exhausted because he was out drinking until 2AM the night before.

Whatever the reason for the dude's exhaustion, this scene is repeated a thousand times a day in Tokyo and the photo is mediocre at best and totally uninteresting.

Must be embarrassing when he goes back to his office, and walking around with a grid pattern on the back of his clean shirt!

Some people feel no shame.

The early morning, hung-over and two-hour commute, the monotany of office work and business trips, probably poor diet, the trip to the izakaya instead of going home after work finally finishes, the uncomfortable nodding off on the last train, then the very late night meal before sleeping in a separate room for 4 hours tops. This generation of people won't reach the centennarian age.

I probably would not lay their considering what I have seen people do in public places in the city.

If he was so tired that he needed to take his shoes off and lie down on an uncomfortable hard stone surface why did he even bother leaving his office to go outside in the first place? A quick 40 winks at the desk desk would have been much more productive and comfortable, but then possibly no-one would have seen how tired he was.
