Melon season
Picture of the Day ( 37 )
Square watermelons are on display at a store in Tokyo Midtown. The melons come from an agricultural cooperative in Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture, which ships about 600 nationwide, with a price tag starting at 10,000 yen. The melons are grown this way by being put into cubes of translucent plastic while still on the vine. The idea was originally to make it easier for them to fit into refrigerators.

"starting at 10,000 yen"
And going up to...? Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Why not send the profits to Fukushima?
Not too hard to make them cubic. Called growing them in a wooden box.

A hundred bucks plus for a damn watermelon is utterly ridiculous!

No, as the article points out, they grow them in translucent plastic cubes; they have been doing this for years and this is reported on every year ad nauseum.

cactus: I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes I think Japanese and yes, foreigners in Japan lose sight of how incomprehensible prices are for certain things. At a bar/club in Tokyo I remember a party of Japanese being charged upwards of $100 for a large plate of assorted cut fruits. I was in disbelief.

What's the big deal?
Obviously someone as willing to pay for it. Not like the average Joe Bloke would even consider one of those.
Goods sell for the price that people are willing to pay, not more nor less.

Let's grow them in an Octagon-cross section shape. New Business-idea. Anyone wants to follow?
2

Here is an idea, let's grow them in a round shape and sell them for five bucks each.

I don't even care what shape they are so long as they are juicy and in my line of vision.

Every time I see a square watermelon, it reminds me of an episode of ''The Simpsons'' when they come to Japan and Homer spends a lot of money buying one of these.
I think it's foolish to spend that amount of money on a watermelon.

Won't be buying this one anytime soon.

What else can we grow in cubes and charge 10x???

With so many people in Tohoku still suffering, some people in Japan are going to spend 10,000 yen + for a watermelon. Incredible.

What an incredibly ridiculous thing to write.
Why don't YOU send YOUR salary to Fukushima? Not to mention cashing in your possessions, withdrawing your life savings, selling the clothes off your back... and send that money to Fukushima? And while you're at it, you can relocate to the Tohoku region to volunteer in the relief effort instead of wasting time posting your over-simplified and totally unrealistic outlook on the Internet.
Must we all suddenly start second guessing our every thought and action because someone chooses to remind us people in the Tohoku region have been hard-done-to?

If you have a balcony, Why not go your own cubed shaped watermelon? It's a vine plant so a flower pot will do, It's a really good space saver especially if your growing the small variety. Just stack the cubes in my case crates on top of each other in 2's and 3's and watch them grow. It takes 80 days but by September you'll have your own.

Sometimes a watermelon is just a watermelon.
Honestly, with prices like these I'm surprised my friends who live in the "country" (Enoshima) don't have a veg garden in the back yard.
