Nice to see JT showing the US Navy doing something that is not crime related. So this means we're going to get hit with 1000 more negative stories before another one of these pops up.

I mean, good on this guy doing something good, I just get tired of the same anti-US crowd here that JT draws.

I wonder why he's the only one who looks like he's enjoying the thing. His smile seems to say that he's glad he's a few centimeters shorter than everyone else carring the weight.

I'm rather shocked this just ain't right. J.T you need to prep the readership before you do a radical departure like this. Oh sure, I can see J.T running a picture like this about a sailor in Yokosuka, but the caption? I can't handle two positive things about a Sailor in Yokosuka at once. I need some breathing space to actually digest this. I'm sure much of your readership is feeling the same way.
I'd suggest maybe a caption change from this:
To: A sailor from the U.S. Navy base at Yokosuka tries to steal a mikoshi in broad daylight during a festival in Hemi-cho, Yokosuka, on Sunday.
I can deal with that instead of this blunt shock to my system.
Serious note though, very good to see this and he sure looks like he is enjoying himself, nice work Taka.

its a shame that non of the public give a damn about it....it should be a fun event...I remember doing the same in Nagano and that was a great event. I suppose that what city folks are like.

Sailwind and The Sicilian,
The biggest reason I took that picture was that the guy really was having a good time but I have to be honest, I also took it with submitting it to JT in mind.
Many of us complain that JT doesn't show the military in a positive light. Perhaps if they had more positive things to display, they would. Obviously, they had no problem running this pic. It was online less than two hours after I emailed it to them, so I don't think there is a conscience effort to show the military in a bad light. They just don't get the good stories.
We have to get the stories to them.
Taka
P.S. Thanks Sail.

Yes, kenchan, pictures can be deceiving since this is only one instant of time, but it truly looks like it is the sailor who has captured the real spirit of matsuri. Looking at him makes me feel happy.
Maybe he's thinking about his next president.

I agree we do have to get the stories to them. You remember back on May 21st what happened at Yokosuka’s Kenritsu Daigaku station? I kept waiting for the Kyodo or any of the J-press to publish that story. It happened at the train station I use everyday on my way to work. Boy, talk about a modest guy.

Maybe a little off-topic mods but could you let the link stand in the spirit of Taka's post and the picture of the sailor having a great time experiencing real Japanese culture. This was a story that really was something and should have gotten major press here and it really was to bad that it didn't.

Do I detect an ever-so slight sense of paranoia amongst some of the members here ? It's a fun photo, so why don't we just enjoy it ? The reason why all those anti-US military stories come up is because of the US military crimes that we read about here. They are not related to this picture so why not just enjoy it ?

Whether such efforts at cultural fluency are typical or atypical of American servicemen and women in Japan is open to question. (I have my opinion, based on experience.)
It is evident that Taka313 confirmed that the person was actually a sailor from Yokosuka. (Did you talk with him or know him beforehand?)

Taka: You have hit it right on. I think JT needs the good news to come from us readers, and not expect a Kyodo news feed to provide one. Nice picture, BTW.
Northlondon: No paranoia here. I'm bagging on JT and the crowd that normally gathers here. Now, I probably should not bag JT at all for posting this. Hell, I'm now inspired to find these photo ops around here (as long as I don't look at a Baskin Robbins around 8:30 pm)...Joke....
