Naruto Straits

Naruto Straits
COURTESY OF TOKUSHIMA PREFECTURAL GOV'T

A sightseeing boat approaches a whirlpool under the Onaruto Bridge, a suspension bridge connecting Kobe with Naruto and Tokushima in the Shikoku region. The whirlpools are created by the ebb and flow of currents in Naruto Strait and vortexes can reach up to 20 meters in diameter, swirling at a velocity of 20 kilometers per hour.

you could make electricity from such a current. 20km/h might seem slow, but think of the amount of water moving, really incredible. UK has some water turbine research and I don't see why Japan can't do something similar. Since it's just current moving the blades slowly, it would not interfere with aquaculture or the naruto since you would put the turbines away from it.

    Good picture.

I think any turbine research would spoil the appearance of Japan's (the world's?) longest bridge. It's quite picturesque. Riding the tug around to see the whirlpools, though, your mileage will vary - sometimes you get good views, but sometimes they're hard to distinguish.

As I recall, there was a similar pic before. Anyway, nice photo, look quite dangerous

Who cares if it's the same pic... it's not a bad one, and covers a pretty unique phenomenon, unlike strippers and girls with their cleavage showing as they lob a very poor first pitch at a baseball game (I'm against neither of the latter pictures, by the way!). I've twice been on sightseeing boats that go out to these whirlpools and it's pretty amazing stuff... not the biggest whirlpools in the world, I'm sure, but the strength of the currents is amazing.

Moderator: Readers, it is not the same photo, although we have posted similar photos of the Naruto Straits in May in previous years.

um, the research would be underwater. Water is more dense than air, so a turbine can be larger and move much slower to produce much more electricity than a regular windmill
