    There's bound to be a few bad apples in every batch, you can't say that every hanami was crap becasue of the usual rowdy oyaji who had few too many happoshus

    I didn't know so many people were anti-hanami. Outdoors, a little nature, good friends, a few drinks, some music, a bit of dancing, meeting new people, seeing familiar faces. All adds up to a good time in my book.

    Disillusioned

    I have lived in Japan for a decade and I still don't get hanami. They are trees with flowers on them and they flower every year. What is all the fuss about? Are the Japanese so hard up for something to ogle? Fair enough, they are pretty and refreshing, but is it really necessary for a nation to go completely nuts over them every bloody year?

    Gaienmae is better. A little less crowded and nice spots to chill. Yasukuni is crazy and of course then there are the criminals laying there.

    Ueno is even better. I got a bunch of free food/drink there during one hanami.

    Hanami is a good way to get out after a long winter and have a big social gathering. No problems there. Happens the world over. In Japan it just centers around sakura and everybody does the same thing.

    I particularly enjoyed the coverage of himeji jo this year. People que-ing from 5 in the morning because (GASP) it will be closed for renovations for the next five years and (GASP) people wont be able to see the castle AND the cherry blossoms at the same time. Shock. Horror. I really laughed.

    However I really LOVE hanami. Drunkeness and debauchery and sekko-hara by this naughty, naughty shufu!

    Wow, its a party people. If you want to view cherry blossoms there are plenty of places where you can view them outside of a park. I happen to love this holiday just like any other holiday that gives people an excuse to get together, throw back a few, and have a good time. Last time I went to a park to have a picnic with a few friends on a nice sunny day, we were bored out of our minds seeing as there was no one around.

    Interesting photo, well done, in a brown tink that was used many years ago rather then B&W film only or colour in later years. Name of the brown tint I cannot remember what it was called.

    Sepia-tone is the name of the tint but that's not what was done here. It's just the result of taking the night photo using only the lighting from the lanterns. If they had used a sepia filter, the reds in the banners on the right would be more brown.

    FWIW, I have no problem with this big "Spring is finally here!" celebration. Only shut-ins would have a problem with going outside and relaxing with their neighbors.
