Japan's Kei Nishikori signs autographs for fans after defeating Australia's John Millman to reach the third round of the men's singles tennis competition at the Rio Olympics on Monday night. Nishikori, the fourth seed, won 7-6 (4), 6-4, and joined countryman Taro Daniel in the next round. Daniel beat Briton Kyle Edmund 6-4, 7-5. Nishikori next plays Slovakia's Andrej Martin, while Daniel meets Juan Martin Del Potro. In the women's competition, Japan's Misaki Doi and Nao Hibino both lost second-round matches. Doi lost to Australian Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-4, while Hibino was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by French Open champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain.

I think Nishikori has an excellent shot at a medal.

He should win his next round match and then faces either Monfils or Cilic. The courts are on the slow side and Nishkori prefers faster hard courts. If he beats Monfils or Cilic he'll probably play Murray in the semis. He has a good chance at a medal but it is still not an easy road.

Yes, certainly not easy. He has superior head to heads against both Monfils and Cilic, but both can beat anyone on their day.

Should he manage that, to win bronze he needs to beat either Nadal or del Potro probably.

With the majority of the greats ousted or out through injury, absolutely! But as has been seen already, this is a tournament full of surprises (which could also be why he might win). But the others are right that there is still a tough road ahead with even Djokovic and Federer out, since Murray and Cilic in particular are still in, and Monfils could still play well.

Exactly! It's impossible to say whose day it will be; could be Nishikori's big break, or could be others'.

Nishikori's energy level seems just enough to win bronze, hopefully.

Would be wonderful to see Japan win Gold, but I think the U.K really needs a gold medal lol. Not having the best of Olympics this time around, where as is Japan is having a great one I think.

Ha ha! Yes, Japan - and us Aussies - are dominating at present and having superb Games. But I feel Team GB will grab a few golds very soon. Way too many world-best athletes not to - and I'd pencil Murray in for this gold with Djokevic shocking the world and being bundled out...
