Hidetoshi Kadota, the chief engineer of Nissan Motors Co’s Leaf, demonstrates how to recharge the car during its launch at their global headquarters in Yokohama on Friday. Nissan marked a major milestone in automotive history with the launch of the zero-emission Leaf, the world’s first electric car to be mass-marketed. The vehicle will have a starting price of 3,764,250 yen, but the actual price consumers pay will be 2,984,250 yen as the car will be eligible for government subsidies. See story here.

It will be interesting to see how this car sells. You can get a similar sized Hybrid Honda Fit for half the price.

A boon to the industry. One of the major hurdles will be to bring down the cost of replacement batteries. With a big company backing all-electric,battery production costs might very well break the marketing threshold. Gimme my Tesla.

Even if it sells, electric cars have no long-term future. I'd give them a decade at the most before self-generating technologies make the scene and make the Leaf obsolete.

Gasoline driven cars have been obsolete for more than 50 years. What's taken them so long? Greed and keeping the status quo by big oil as we all know but are too afraid to take a realistic look at. When new technologies emerge, the paradigms shift through the force of innovation. These cars should have by now, been far ahead of their technological levels shown at here.
