O Bon voyage

Picture expired.

Passengers crowd the departure terminal at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on Friday. Airports, expressways and bullet trains were packed with tourists and people returning to their hometowns for the “Bon” holiday week.

Makes perfect sense. You live everyday packed into crowded trains/subways -- jammed together/jostling others at every turn -- and then you "relax" by crowding onto planes and the shinkansen with everyone else.

No, you relax by meeting your family in your hometown, enjoying good times and memories together. Shoving yourself in crowded transportation is just the price you have to pay for that relaxation.

Smorkian -- how predictable. You decided to respond with your usual semantic nonsense. But, respectfully, studies have shown it takes about four days of true relaxation before you really begin to de-stress, for lack of a better word. And since most of these folks will turn around and return within a couple of days, they never truly relax. But if your consider that relaxation, go for it. And be proud in that you have truly accepted devotion to Japan Inc. completely and now define relaxing accordingly. And just forget that you are entitled to probably two weeks or more of actual vacation time that you dare not take.

And you with your usual post attacking me. Don't you have anything better to do? Anything?

Hmm, I guess that explains why most of my coworkers are taking the next full week off, or the week after. They dare not use those precious holidays!

Happy? Where? There is nothing 'happy' about being stuck in the o'bon exodus. It is not a vacation. It is a duty!

    It"S ME

My son is having a great time staying with his grans in Nagoya, granted he got there some days ago and will be there for another week or so.

Today they received a food-hamper from moi, just takes a bit of planning and not being a lemming. I don't mind as I enjoy being free of him and being able to do my own stuff.

Stay off the roads because here comes the rush. The urbanites are coming with their poor manners, selfishness, and trash. This is perhaps the best time to be in the big city.

I love central tokyo at O-bon time! But silly us for deciding to take the expressway out to Saitama to visit Ikea today. We got about 2 junctions down and then bailed and went local for sushi instead - the traffic was insane.
