Japanese office workers pack the compound of Kanda Myojin shrine as they offer prayers, wishing for a prosperous business year, in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward on Wednesday. During the day, around 30,000 business people visited Kanda Myojin which is known as the shrine of commerce and industry.

Are these workers directed to Kanda Myojin by their employers or Nippon Keidanren?

Somebody asked me the other day if Japanese were religious after seeing all the activities at shrines during the New Year. I don't know if you could call this "being religious" or "being superstitious."

What if someone stuck in the middle suddenly feels the urge to go to the toilet?

I was wondering how do you leave the shrine after you have offered up your prayer for prosperity. There's not an inch of space to get around anybody. Please tell me there's a back way out.

This is surely a part of their traditional culture, very different from Europe and America. I don't criticize them.

I'd call it superstition. Then again, I try not to walk under ladders. Similar, except it never gets crowded round ladders.

Ah, that makes me love my small town even more. When we went to the shrine, there was nobody.
