Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The headquarters of Fuji TV at Odaiba in Tokyo, lit up in pink, is seen behind Rainbow Bridge on Saturday night in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many other well-known landmarks in Japan were also lit up in pink, including Tokyo Tower and Himeji Castle.

I've only been to this area a couple of times, but I love the ride there on the tram, the scale of the place is awesome

Having lost a wife to breast-cancer(5 yrs struggle) and my mother fighting it for over 20yrs I am all for it. And yes man can also have breast cancer.

Any form of cancer is tough.

I'm glad more and more emphasis is being placed on awareness and treatment, especially as the most common form of cancer among women of all races and ages. I think more emphasis needs to be placed on cancer prevention in general, though, or else equal or similar emphasis put on other types of cancer. For example, while slightly lower in terms of numbers diagnosed, nearly as many men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and it has a higher fatality. Colorectal cancer is the third biggest type, and killer, among men and women (more for men). Lung cancer kills the most, and I think a lung cancer month where smoking is banned universally would go a LONG way towards awareness (how clean the air would become!) and prevention.

Good on Fuji TV for doing this, as well as all other companies and facets of society that get involved. I hope awareness of this and other cancers, detection methods and the need for testing, etc., become even more common than today. Another thing we need to do for breast cancer (and others) is ensure that as well as self-checking that women in poorer areas of the world have access to other methods of examination, since it affects so many and may not be noticeable at first by touch, if at all.

In addition to Fuji TV, the Statue of Liberty, and the Rainbow Bridge itself (though the above pic doesn't show it) were also lit up in pink. Tokyo Tower was too. I happened to be in the area on Saturday night and the impact of it was pretty strong.

By the way there IS a prostate cancer awareness month -- September -- it's just that no one is aware of it, and there is certainly not the same level of support you see here. Why not?
