Perhaps some were hoping to get their money back from the island donations?

"Shintaro Ishihara"

Isn't this the guy who said the 2011 earthquake and tsunami was divine punishment for selfish people?

Yes it sure is, but none of those gathered would believe it. Even the the housewives are in denial.

Come on Japanese people, your apathy to politics and refusal to make important social and economic reforms is your own doing. If you'd dared to challenge the status quo instead of the usual shrugs and utterances of "shouganai" at all levels, you might have enacted some positive change for your country. Instead now you're letting these right-wing loons take centre stage and persuade you that it's everyone else's fault but your own. Instead of letting situations humble you and find ways to come back stronger, you've let yourselves get caught up in a flawed sense of superiority and xenophobia.Get your acts together, and let a more moderate and intelligent destiny take shape- or watch history repeat itself.

I bet half them just showed up so they could see a celeb -- not that they'd vote for him. Then again, I bet half the people that vote for him only do so because he's from there and is popular (not that they'd agree with his policies).
