Smoke from incense rises over people as they stand in line to offer New Year prayers at Sensoji temple in Tokyo’s Asakusa on Tuesday. Temple officials said more than 2 million people were expected to visit Sensoji during the Jan 1-3 holiday period.

If only prayer could make one iota of difference in a random and meaningless universe. Alas, such is not the case - there is no teleological explanation. However, this shouldn't stop us from urging all members of mankind to live up to the humanist ideals of rational, self-consequential, and responsible living; cooperatively seeking the advancement and protection of our whole global society... or simply put: Happy New Year!

Far out - Nakamise-dōri is busy enough on a normal day.
I guess the shops wouldn't dare be open with this mass of flesh shuffling by... even if it wasn't a holiday

Hmmm. I didn't expect to see many younger people here...but judging by purely external appearences they may be merely children of conservative parents..
