There are always stories popping up in the media on how it might erupt someday. Earthquakes and volcanic activities are closely related. Fuji in its present form is only 8,000 years old, which makes it just a baby in geological terms.

Fuji in the winter from Kugenuma Kaigan where I always surf looks great. Hard to see this time of year, so wondering when this was taken.

Close up, it's a pile of cinders. Much better seen at a distance, as in this lovely photo.

Fuji-San is best in the distance.

Most people that seen it up close-up(ie climbed it) don't want to do so again.

Once you get past the 6th station it is all red loose rock/gravel on a badly maintained route(crowded) and the stations over-charge you like anything for food, etc. Spend 6-8hrs to climb it and maybe if the weather is fine you get a few good snaps of the sunrise, and than a 4-5hr descents which will kill your legs.

To be honest the most boring and tedious ascent I have done and I like my mountains but at the end of the day .....

"Most people that seen it up close-up(ie climbed it) don't want to do so again."

    The often repeated saying is:

"one who never climbs Mount Fuji is a fool, and one who climbs twice is twice the fool.".

I like the headline making a play on "fuji." Clever.

Why is the top-left corner so dark? Was it a mistake with a cpl?

    Beautiful picture though!

True, it is a pile of brownish cinders from close up above 6th station, but for love of God don't do the night hike with the crowds only to get a glimpse of the sunrise (have done that). Have been up 3 other times as a day hike (and will go again) and the view above the clouds is breathtaking. Coming down is a bit of a struggle though.

I can attest to that. Going up's no picnic either. But Fuji sure does look beautiful in this photo.
