Reaching out

“Jack Reacher” star Tom Cruise, right, poses with co-star Rosamund Pike and director Christopher McQuarrie on the red carpet at the Japan premiere at Tokyo International Forum on Wednesday night. The film, titled “Outlaw” for Japan, opens here on Feb 1. Cruise also announced for the first time that he will start work on the 5th “Mission: Impossible” film, which McQuarrie will direct.

This would be like calling Jerry Maguire: 'Rouge Agent'... Only the Japanese.

I'm sure Jakku Riichaa wouldn't have been too much of a stretch for audiences. Alas my2sense, the Chinese are even more confusing with their translations. My favourite was 'Free Willy', which in China got translated to: A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven

Yeah, I wish they'd just keep the name consistent in Japanese. I've often had a hard time talking about movies with Japanese since the movie titles were different in English and Japanese. Same with "Jerry McGuire" and "ザ エイジェント”.

I don't mind so much when they're direct translations i.e. "Silence of the Lambs" > "羊の沈黙” (hitsuji no chinmoku). But I don't like it when they change the title and the original meaning of the title.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing this on the big screen. BTW, for those of us that have straight dark hair, we ALL look like Tom Cruise in Japan.

When naming the movies for the Japanese market, the overriding concern should be the convenience of foreign-Japanese conversations.

And there goes my New Year's resolution to be less sarcastic in 2013!

Should have stuck with "Jyaku Richa-". The movie is named after a character in a series of books. Japanese movie fans will miss out on this connection. As for the movie, I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan but this film was a pretty good. I like Cruise better in this role than in "Mission Impossible".

Why is that when the Japanese Film Board changes a title because it would be unfamiliar or unappealing to the Japanese they rarely change it to a name using Japanese but instead another Katakana title?

Just wondering for those fluent... Would either ジャック or リーチャ have been an obscenity or otherwise been a negative choice for a title? I'm with snowcrashed, looking at the picture I couldn't figure out WHAT was under "Tom Cruise" on the background banner.
