Robot receptionist

Visitors look at a kimono-clad android named Aiko Chihira, developed by Toshiba Corp, at the reception desk of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo on Monday. Aiko, which can use sign language and introduce itself, is designed to interact with customers. It has been upgraded so it can speak in Chinese, a department store official said. See story here.

Robot Receptionist & Customers (!)

The customers look like robots.

What a useless idea. Is this Mitsukoshi's answer to the dwindling population? I hope not.

What a disappointment these robots are.. It's 2015 and they still just are a tape recorder with a Yukata.

I don't know. I think it's kind of fun and creepy at the same time. A creepy-fun visit to the Uncanny Valley. I'd love to see this in person. Which may be kind of ironic.

Kawaii !!

Unlike her real-life counterparts—almost always young women—who welcome customers to shops like this, Aiko Chihira cannot answer questions, but simply runs through her pre-recorded spiel.

Can men NOT do this job? Human men I mean..

Stop this crap already! Don't call it robots unless it has real A.I. instead of pre-programmed algorithms.

An AI is an AI, and a robot is a robot. They are not synonymous, and an AI is not required by the definition of a robot.

This would go down really well with the swarms of aggressive obaasans that storm through Mitsukoshi each & every day.

Department store receptionists are robots anyway.

To impersonal for me. An authentic beautiful smile is worth a thousand words.

@Strangerland Robot or android or whatever you want to call it. Doesn't matter. The creators of these pretend them to be intelligent but they are just stupid, preprogrammed machines in the same league like an automat in a car factory. that was my point.

Sad. Really, really sad. Chikan dream date?

They could make her a little more lifelike and pretty. The human girls were much more welcoming. Soon there will be hostess bars and karaoke using robots. Next will be robot salaryman at Toyota ...
