Safe strawberries

Picture expired.

An official uses a radiation detector to measure levels of radiation in a pack of strawberries grown in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, during an event Thursday to promote the safety of the region’s agricultural products in Tokyo.

First genius that comes up with some simple stickers that change color under radiation will make billions. Sell them to all food producers, so they can ensure their food is safe.

Hard to believe how one company's power plant can cause so much trouble for so many people.

Those strawberries look scrumptious, and the girl in the mask has very pretty eyes.

She even has the nails that goes with those strawberries.

Can someone confirm that this is bogus? Afaik, the alpha and beta radiation that is the concern about contaminated food travels only a few millimeters and can not be measured by pointing a gaiger counter at some fruit. And if she is measuing gamma radiation, she can point it in any direction. Or what?

I've read recently that food can't be tested for radiation by this method.

A geiger counter works by detecting the ionization produced by a radioactive particle. So if the food contains radioactive particles they can be detected

Depends on how strong the emissions are. If it's enough to be harmful, it should ionise. Generally, geiger counters are not very accurate for gamma radiation though since gamma doesn't ionise air. Scintillators are much better for detecting gamma radiation.

I really hope they don't turn the radioactivity problem into a show..

    The angle of the photo?

This reminds me of that episode of "Gilligan's Island" where a crate of irradiated produce washed up on the island. Mary Ann ate the mutated carrots and got super telescopic vision. いいな~

Measuring what types of radiation? This isn't 100% safe.

    porter

Accurate measurement of radiation in food requires a multi-channel analyzer and a special oven for ashing the food to concentrate the radioactivity.

if the govt really wants to help the region and the economy on the whole they should publicize these events more. even have KAN out there on TV eating Fukushima foods so the Japanese people can trust they are safe and can buy them.

The amount of food related scandals I have seen in Japan since I have lived here make me not trust anybody when it comes to food from around the reactor area. I'm not taking any chances with kanto/tohoku produce.

Negative radiation. Or maybe he wasn't pulling the trigger at the moment the photo was taken.

Yes, nice eyes. Nice, scintillating eyes. Scintillating with ... radiation!!?

    (only kidding)

I'm sure that just simply pointing the geiger counter can only help improve strawberry sales.

Yes, but that was my point. The concern in contaminated food is not gamma, but alpha and beta radiation. And that does not penetrate the skin, or even a few millimeters of strawberry frut, for that matter. So how in the world does she measure that by point some instrument at the fruit at a distance?

    Thanks. That´s what I figured.

"Geiger counters are probably ineffective for consumers in detecting hazardous levels of radiation in food and water at home, scientists, professors and device makers said." So this is just a PR stunt to try and allay peoples fears then?

    Kronos

    PR Stunt.

Go to Bloomberg and read the article "Geiger Counters Unlikely to Detect Radiation in Food, Water"

I bet if the Geiger was on, the alarm would go off and everyone would leave...and the "it is safe" photo-op would be destroyed. Geiger off = everyone happy.
