First genius that comes up with some simple stickers that change color under radiation will make billions. Sell them to all food producers, so they can ensure their food is safe.

Can someone confirm that this is bogus? Afaik, the alpha and beta radiation that is the concern about contaminated food travels only a few millimeters and can not be measured by pointing a gaiger counter at some fruit. And if she is measuing gamma radiation, she can point it in any direction. Or what?

A geiger counter works by detecting the ionization produced by a radioactive particle. So if the food contains radioactive particles they can be detected

Depends on how strong the emissions are. If it's enough to be harmful, it should ionise. Generally, geiger counters are not very accurate for gamma radiation though since gamma doesn't ionise air. Scintillators are much better for detecting gamma radiation.

Accurate measurement of radiation in food requires a multi-channel analyzer and a special oven for ashing the food to concentrate the radioactivity.

if the govt really wants to help the region and the economy on the whole they should publicize these events more. even have KAN out there on TV eating Fukushima foods so the Japanese people can trust they are safe and can buy them.

The amount of food related scandals I have seen in Japan since I have lived here make me not trust anybody when it comes to food from around the reactor area. I'm not taking any chances with kanto/tohoku produce.

Yes, but that was my point. The concern in contaminated food is not gamma, but alpha and beta radiation. And that does not penetrate the skin, or even a few millimeters of strawberry frut, for that matter. So how in the world does she measure that by point some instrument at the fruit at a distance?

I bet if the Geiger was on, the alarm would go off and everyone would leave...and the "it is safe" photo-op would be destroyed. Geiger off = everyone happy.
