there are cherry trees all over the world, not just in Japan. In fact, it is even common that in these places, those trees produce cherries, not just flowers (surprise!). Apart from that, there are two kind of trees with blossoms even nicer than the cherry tree: the almond tree and the orange tree, and both are far more fragrant than the J-cherry trees. As far I've seen, hana-mi is basically eating and drinking outside in the very early spring days, with friends or family. Well, that can also be found anywhere else in the world! The difference is that BBQ here are tiny-mini and parks are infested of people...

"Only the Japanese can truly appreciate cherry blossoms, the four seasons and wabi-sabi. Don’t even bother trying if you are not a true Japanese - you will look like an elephant in a pink tu-tu trying to ballet dance."
Voxman replies:
If that is so then I guess we should close the Louvre in Paris down to all Japanese, because clearly you would have to be a Parisan or at least from the West to appreciate the glorious art contained therein. It would be like a Otaku looking at the Venus d'milo and thinking it was the ultimate fantasy doll.

Nessie - two questions:
Are you going to kiss the fake blue sky in this great photo?
How the heck do you get an avatar?
Should I get one one? I know, that's 3 questions...

Cherry blossoms "were" (that would be in italics if this were a real website) in full bloom in Naka-meguro, and those that survived the rain today will be knocked over by the strong winds tomorrow, along with a few similarly fragile stick-legged same-bag loving bambies trying to run to the station.

I resent that remark.
Why, in Bloomfield New Jersey there is a 'Cherry Blossom Festival' that can melt your heart and say 'I do' to your spouse once again.

Interesting that with such a nice picture so many people have only nasty things to say......

johnalex40, I'd wager green tea said that with tongue in cheek. I for one applaud the green tea for his incisive swipe.

in full bloom surrounded by concrete ugliness. I dont get it? hanami parties are useless. I would rather head down to the meguro tavern for roast pork with apple sauce, roast lamb with mint sauce, roast beef with gravy, roast potatos, mashed potatos, peas and brussel sprouts. 1500 Yen all you can eat.
Tahoochi at 07:11 AM JST - 2nd April
Hanami parties are a reason to get drunk and eat outside with friends, family, co-workers, look at hot women (or men I guess), oh yeah, and look at the pretty flowers.
Don't go outside.
That just can't be true. Tom Cruise appreciated bushido in "The Last Samurai".
...why all the negativity?
Baa-hum-bug!
