I'm really liking that view.

Not every photo is a selfie! It's a real camera set a top a tripod. 3 years ago it would just be called a photo.

I thought it was an ad for "haramaki !"

Nice rump !

why is this a selfie?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

why is this a selfie?

Because she's taking a picture of herself.

I see 2 ladies taking a PIC together. Still a selfie when 2 or more people are involved?

These ladies are truly talented. If we are looking at a selfie, how was she able to take a picture of herself taking a picture of herself? Looks to me like a 3rd party took a picture of two ladies looking at a camera.

I was actually agreeing with you in a round a bout way. ""real selfie" it would have to be shot with a mobile phone" But you are correct, her mobile phone or another camera could have been on a secondary tripod.

Thanks! We agree again, and you answered your own query at the same time.

"Looks to me like a 3rd party took a picture of two ladies looking at a camera."

"Why?"

"the real owner who took a photo of them is AP photographer Shizuoka Kamabayashi"

A "selfie" is really a photo taken by oneself.....one's own hands. mouth etc........ .without the aid of any tripods or passersby.

Selfie:

A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media:

I thought selfie nmeant camera/phone in hand (or maybe on one of those extendable holders) - this is just one of those delayed ction shots which were around long before selfie was coined. selfie is anyway an awful development - now an inescapable part of our dumbed down culture.

A yukata is a very comfortable garment to wear for summer and makes the women look particularly beautiful. It draws out the charms of a women to the greatest if the wearer gestures extravagantly or walks with long strides. I feel that wearing a yukata always makes you behave in a refined manner and if you put it on right, it naturally makes your comportment befitting a Japanese women. For me the beauty of a yukata is that you can wear it in many ways and enjoy your ideas.

I agree with Mirai and others: this is a group photo in a sightseeing location, taken using a dedicated camera device (not smartphone or webcam), a tripod and a timer. There are two people, an actual background and we can only assume the photo will be shared on social networks.

All my respect to Oxford dictionary, but why limit it to smartphone and webcam? Also why have to be posted on social media?

My definition would be "photo taken with any photographic tool with your OWN hand without delay". And of coarse the owner decides how to use it - sending to relatives via mail, printing, social media - it still would be 'selfie'. Doesn't mater how many people in the frame if one of them took it.

The picture above is taken with self-TIMER function - not a selfie!

Nice shot.

Interesting. I agree yukata make the wearer look refined (or sometimes cute depending on their age). On men, I think geta look good and have been told that this used to be the norm?

In any case, I'm glad this part of Japanese culture is still going strong.

I don't think this is a selfie. Yukata really suits Japanese women and look yum. i hate the proliferation of selfies in our lives and media.

The Oxford entry provided by Strangerland says "typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media", that means to me that selfies are not RESTRICTED to these devices or sharing and that the ladies are indeed taking a selfie.

Model release needed?

For a butt-shot? Get real here please.

Selfie: another buzz word misinterpreted by the media.

Sorry, but a selfie is a photo taken of oneself (with or without others) using a cell phone or cam held at arms length. Using a tripod or asking someone else to take the photo of 'yourself' is not a selfie.

A nice pic, though, all told. Now, who took the pic of the girls taking the non-selfie?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Sorry, but a selfie........Buwahahaha!

What a waste of time. lol

This is an old way of taking pictures of oneself. Good to know such 'old' practices are alive and well. The tripod makers must be relieved! On another note, could the 'selfie way' have been invented by some tourist who were afraid of using cameras-on-tripods placed away from themselves and had them snatched by opportunistic thieves/robbers who preyed on tourist?

If not a selfie... then is a self-portrait...
