Springing a leak

A section of a hose, top, from which 12 tons of highly radioactive water containing strontium-90 leaked into the ocean from a purification unit on Thursday, is seen covered up with vinyl tape with other hoses connected to a device that is used to decontaminate cooling water leaking from reactors at the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The leak came as TEPCO struggles to keep the melted reactors cool and contain radiation and raises concerns about its ability to keep the plant stable. Similar leaks have occurred several times since last year.

Repaired with a plastic bag they must be joking.

Bandaged up highly dangerous pipe, this pic tells the whole story so clearly.

No other words needed now, the whole word can see how feeble this tepco is and how lightly it takes this situation.

Really unbelievable !!

Nice... Privatize TEPCO NOW!

-4 ( +3 / -5 )

stipend... I think TEPCO is already a private enterprise, which is one of the main reasons why they've been so greedy. Perhaps you meant to say "nationalize"?

What I find creepy is the thought of the poor guys who had to tape this up with strontium water leaking all over them for an hourly wage that is probably about the same as a Kombini workers gets.

And they say a picture is worth a thousand words. This one is screaming incompetent fools......

5 ( +5 / -2 )

lol! my mistake! - My holiday's starting early /(@.@)

Yes, 'nationalize' TEPCO - and right away!

"highly radioactive water containing strontium-90" and "vinyl tape" should not be used in the same sentence!

I can not believe my eyes gogogo you said it. Someone actually put vinyl tape into a worker (s) hand and said fix the leak. Highly Radioactive Water is too dangerous to handle I thought. I hope against hope that the workers are okay this stuff is just too dangerous to play with.

Highly radioactive? I bet the photogragher is glowing right now too.

Nice! Duct tape and plastic bags! Clearly dealing with professionals here folks! Ya gotta wonder about their ability to deal with this. Not surprising they rejected any international help. Obviously it was from fear of the rest of the world laughing at their haphazard work!

12 tons is not much considering. 1 cubic cm. of water weighs one gram.

How dod this photo make it out of the plant in the first place? I thought the order of the day was to cover things up and smile for thr crowd. If there ever was a reason to worry and run, then that picture gives you all you'd ever need. I suppose people are just so used to hearing about one issue after another with Fukushima these days, that the seriousness doesn't really hit home anymore.

That black rubber tube all teh stuff is in doesn't look very reliable even where it isn't damaged. Is it a temporary covering or was it always like that?

Wonder if Tepco is going to put that pic on the top of their homepage with the caption: "Mission Accomplished".

Nice job TEPCO, now we really know how they are fixing the problem................ NOT!!!!!!! Anyone want to be we are still hearing this same thing in a few years time, they will never get on top of this........

I think this picture will adorn one of those FAIL posters for years to come. Can just see the poster now.... This picture and underneath the words "How not to fix a nuclear disaster"

Well done TEPCO you gave me a laugh for another day. Keep up the great work idiots.....

Now, Im no Tepco apologist, the whole situation scares the heck out of me, however I was not expecting this level of incompetence and makeshift haphazard fixes. Im astounded. Its a bit of string, some tape and plastic bags!

Corporate greed + lack of government regulations (because basically paid off and/or manipulated by corporate interests) = a severe shafting for the general populace. You can use this equation in many situations, in many countries and it will always hold true.

Duct tape and plastic bags? MacGyver was there wasn't he?

This looks like it was put together by a bunch of drunken homeless people. Oh, yea....

3 ( +3 / -0 )

No surprises. Not a brain between all them TEPCO "workers". I remember clearly they were walking around with shopping bags on their feet as "protection" after the disaster. And they have the hide to grumble that their bonuses have been abolished. Cry me a river!

This looks like it was put together by a bunch of drunken homeless people. Oh, yea....

The homeless mob getting paid peanuts are - to be fair - far more intelligent and worthy of respect than the permanent TEPCO mob who tried to flee after the disaster.

I understand the sentiments of those who are screaming for the nationalization of TEPCO. They have proven themselves to be incompetent or worse. Unlike the government, which handles things logically and efficiently, right?

What's needed here is some adult supervision, which apparently is nowhere to be found in Japan at present.

That pipe looks like it started life in a ¥100 yen store! Could there possibly be anything less sturdy? It is no wonder there are leaks.

This is gross incompetence and it is poisoning Japan!

@JohnBecker well said man, I have met and acquainted with hundreds if not thousands of japanese people of both gender, and I can hardly remember even one of them was sensible. No matter who takes charge of the nuclear situation as long as japanese we can't expect a resolution.

@JapanGal obviously you are pro nuclear from all the comments you made on this subject.12 tons isn't much to all pro nuclear people I guess. I guess I made myself very clear how sensible or lack of it adults are in this country.

I don't think the plastic bag covered pipe is the one patched up. The left pipe seems to be the one patched up with black vinyl tape.

So out of the 'thousands' of Japanese people you met, 'of both gender', you were the only one who had common sense? LOL. I think the problem lies with you.

If there is a Typhoon coming it's probably ripping the whole makeshift constraction apart and blows the radiation all over the country.
