Square deals

Cube-shaped watermelons are on display at a store in Tokyo Midtown. The melons come from an agricultural cooperative in Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture, which ships about 600 nationwide, with a price tag of 15,750 yen. The melons are grown this way by being put into cubes of translucent plastic while still on the vine. The idea was originally to make it easier for them to fit into refrigerators.

At that cost? A deal? Seems to me someone does not know what a "deal" is!

Let me see!! Three cases of 500mls Asahi super dry, or a cubed shaped watermelon, I know which one I,d take.. "square deal?? No way, No deal...

Thanks, but I doubt the shape of the rind makes the fruit taste any different, and given you can buy all different shapes of watermelon cuts to put in the fridge or cooler for a BBQ, you would never, ever catch me buying one of these things.

According to another source, they are "catching on among wealthy Russians."

These watermelons are exported to Russia and sold at 85,000 YEN apiece.

Good let them support the economy, I can get them cheaper, and probably better tasting from the guys who sell their watermelons at a roadside stand!

Another product in a long line of insanely expensive fruits that seem to only sprout here in Japan.

No deal! Wiser to go ahead and buy a bigger fridge!!

It's hip to be Square.

They are nothing new, it's a seasonal thing, with farmers here, justifiably so from their point of view I am sure, of finding a unique way to market their products. The niche market that it is supports their efforts, but not from me!

Square overpriced watermelons-it is great to see Abenomics finally working!

Finally working? These melons have been around since the late 80's.

i guess putting the watermelon seeds in that plastic bag must be so difficult that they have to charge you trilpe the price of a regular one.

I do find their price a bit extreme though...I can understand their maket sale approach, but - please!!

Cube-shaped watermelons

what are the long term health effects of these strange looking watermelons? altering the natural growing process must have some unknown effects on these funny looking water melons. do they have any bad effects on children's health/brain? thorough investigations should be conducted before they are put on the market. I wish they leave the watermelons alone and change refrigerator design/shape instead.

What's the problem ? Those farmers are making good money by selling square watermelons and in the meantime you JT experts are doing what ? whining about it like you whine about everything else LOL

yeah, sounds like you guys are all winners and those farmers are dumb

Wow! Last summer they were 10,000 yen. A 50% increase in one year? What a rip off! They taste just the same as a normal watermelon, which are also overpriced. Glad I don't like watermelon.

yeah, calm down there fellar. you're the only winner here, because you're a winner and your comment is making all us JT experts are dumb... right? Wasn't that the nature of your comment? Speaking of nature, who ever heard of nature producing CUBE SHAPED WATERMELONS?? Oh, I get it, it's so that you small Japanese can cram one into your tiny little refrigerators in your tiny little overbearingly hot apartments in the summer?

I'm not calling the farmers dumb at all.... Just the idiotic Japanese consumers who buy watermelons for 15,750 yen...

To whom?

I don't know Yubaru, but the high pricing suggested it is still. Or some people trying to make people thinks it is (still) a novelty of sort.

The high pricing comes from it being labor intensive I do believe, and that there are still folks willing to buy the darn things. Who cares really? I would rather buy 10 of the "old" round type one's and have 10 seed spitting contests with my kids rather than 1!

From what I understand shape has nothing to do with taste.

exactly! so what if it can't fits into the fridge. just put it in a basket or what my grandmother used to do, let it cool down in a tub.
