Square melons ZENTSUJI CO-OP

Square melons are prepared for shipment in Zentsuji in Kagawa Prefecture. The melons are grown this way by being put into cubes of translucent plastic while still on the vine. The idea is to make it easier for them to fit into refrigerators.

In Japan, "Melon" means watermelon, "SU I KA" means melon. Often confuse.

    obviously so

Chibanjin, Suika means watermelon. Meron means melon (cantaloup or rock melon I think).

Besides the marketing issue, they are very convenient for transportation. Maybe you can store double the quantity of the regular ones.

You illustrate your point well - by being confused. It's the other way round.

when i hold up a flashcard of a watermelon, the kids say "su i ka!" they don't say "me ron"

but then I never show them a picture of a square one, so I don't know...

Japan owes more water melon to other nations. Other nations owe, less watermelons to japan.

Square melons for square people. The idea is to make it easier for them to think inside the box.

What the hell does that mean?

There is no way I would pay over five bucks for a watermelon. Consequently, I rarely eat watermelon in Japan. I'll wait till I go home and buy them for a buck each from the truck on the side of the Bruce Highway in QLD.

Sabinuki - great post, didn't see that one coming!

On a different note, I may seem a bit weird for noticing this, but the picture was taken all wrong! Most of it is out of focus. Sure, there are cases when you want to single out some object in a pic, and then you use a shallow depth of field, but in this case the background seems just as significant as the foreground, concordantly it should also be kept in focus. Note to the photographer: not everything with an out-of-focus background is art!

Or maybe this is an accidental effect, in which case whoever took this photo didn't really know what they were doing. And that's just sad!

    Just my opinion...
