Ginza is not the best place to shop in Japan. I like shopping in Yokohama.

"Isn"t this nice relaxing in a spot with lovely greenery and benches honey? Only us Japanese truly understand nature. Do other countries have four seasons I wonder? Probably not."

Well...it really depends what you want to buy doesn't it? If you're after a Gucci handbag Yokohama might not be so great?
I used to get my hair done in Ginza, they were amazing! I also like the days they closed the roads, nice to enjoy shopping in Tokyo with a little more space than i'm used to (Shinjuku) or getting home at the end of the day covered in a film of yuck (Shibuya).
That family looks like they are having a good day :)

I haven't been to Ginza recently but I used to go there a lot in the 50's. I used to go to the Ginza Lion beer hall. The waitress gave me a party horn whenever I went. There was no 歩行者天国 (pedestrian paradise) back then. I believe Ginza's "pedestrian paradise" started back in 1970. By the way, my parents took me there. They would never order me a beer since I was only 5 years old.

Isn't closing the street to traffic inconvenient for the stores which need deliveries, etc?

Serrano: It's usually closed only on Sundays.

I know hoe that poor bloke feels.
"For God's sake, woman, just buy that one you liked four hours ago and let's go home".
Poor sap probably did an 80-hour week, looking forward to his weekend, and this is what he got.

Ginza 60 years ago was filled with US GIs on streets after the WWII. It is now all peaceful and I like that.

I wish they closed down more streets to traffic on weekends.

I wished there were pedestrian zones everywhere all the time in shopping areas.

I was just in Ginza on Thursday. We love the pedestrianised times, not just for the shopping, but the atmosphere too. Its really fun and the kids get such a thrill running in the street, like it is "naughty" or something!!!
To answer Serranos question: it is mostly only the main street that the shops face onto that is blocked. Deliveries can still come up the streets behind the shops.

Deliveries are allowed on the main block streets too.

They did not yet introduce benches for people who want to rest?

If you every go to Ginza on a Sunday, not too sure if Saturday too but I think Sundays they have benches RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, feels real nice to just sit there think to myself, geez maybe I can relax just a bit here before it become MONDAY and all hell will break loose again in this huge city by Tokyo bay.

Ginza has been a status place for high end Japanese consumers for years just like Americans go to the 5th Avenue in NYC.

Yokohama has more to offer than Ginza these days. You can spend all day between the Sakuragicho area and Yokohama station and you'll find everything that is available in Ginza and more.

If you are going to have pedestrian zones, how about a few benches to sit on?

For every pedestrian zone in Japan, not a trash can in sight!
