Looks like a yak. Normally I don't dig tatts no offense, but these look cool.

Someone else seems interested in something else.

Oh festival season? Many years ago, I became a member of a mikoshi group (got dragged into by the brother in law). I have done Sanja at Asakusa about 14 times and lots of other major festivals around Japan. I have even been on exchange to other mikoshi groups and I also held the post of kyoiku kakari (educator) within the group, being responsible for teaching new members some of the slang and customs. I reckon I am one of the few foreign maegashira in Japan.

With regard to the boys with the tatoos, I actually have made a number of friends who are employed in "that line of business." At the same time, I know other mikoshi people who are members of the fuzz. It seems that everybody is friends when it comes to festivals.

A good book on the Japanese tattoo is called "The Japanese Tattoo" by Sandi Fellman. It is a full color A4 glossy originally published by Cross River Press in 1986. I don't know if it has been reprinted. This book shows all parts of the body under ink, and it also goes into some of the subliminal imagery. A good read if you can still find a copy.
