Paramilitary policemen patrol outside the Japanese consulate in Shanghai on Tuesday. China suspended high-level exchanges with Japan on Sunday and promised tough countermeasures after a Japanese court extended the detention of a Chinese captain whose trawler collided with two Japanese coastguard ships.

and they will stand by while the state-sponsored thugs will be destroying the consulate like in 2005.

"state-sponsored thugs"? @hogehoge: are you kidding your arse? If there weren't so many policemen, the consulate should have been smashed for several times by Chinese.

Doesn't that road belong to the French ? Isn't it south of the Hongkou District and International Settlement in Shanghai in the French Concession ? If so, they should get off of French soil...

oooooooooo, men in uniform! . . . . and wearing lovely white gloves!

The photo was well timed as they are all in step and with shiny shoes and swinging arms!
Those long strides they are taking indicate that they are probably quickly headed to a nearby Dunkin Donuts.

The white tape is there to help them walk in a straight line...

Saw a group of these guys Saturday just off Nanjing street. Not one of them under 6'2. Didn't look like dudes to mess with.

Take their stiletto high heels off and they're not so tall. Last and 3rd last are not 6'2.

@northlondon: French administration of the former "French Consession" ended in 1943. So I guess chinese paramilitary police can stay.

My point exactly. China ceded the Senakaku Islands in 1895 so I guess the Japanese can stay there too..

Oh, and the white tape is necessary to ensure they don't get run over. For a place known for authoritarian control, traffic laws may as well not exist. Cross the street at a crosswalk at your own risk.

What will China do if Japan sentences this Chinese captain to a jail term?
