Tottori sand dunes

Sightseers explore Tottori’s famous sand dunes which stretch along the coast east of Tottori City for 16 kilometers. Visitors can tour the dunes on foot, by camel or in a horse-drawn carriage. Paragliding and sandboarding are also popular activities.

There is nothing to milk the money like a camel on the dunes.

Doesn't look like any part of Japan I've seen. Are we sure this is Tottori and not somewhere in the Middle East?

Learned something new today. All my time in Japan I have never heard of these sand dunes in Tottori. Worth a visit? Nah...I'll save the excitement for the Middle East.

Yeah...those dunes are pretty cool...The best part is lying there in the sand and looking down into the ocean...you get a free high. The sand in the Sahara has a different color and of course its beauty will never match this.

Good photo. Japan's best kept secret? I had no idea Japan had such beautiful sand dunes. They do appear to littered with garbage although cigarette butts are too small to see. (I would hope there aren't any.) I have been to some pretty beaches that were ruined by cigarette butts and doggie doo.

If you're already IN Tottori it MIGHT be worthwhile to go and see this. Riding a camel? It costs a fortune for a short time, and is nothing but a sham, really. It is a rather unique element to the archipelago, as is the 'last jungle' on Iriomote Island in Okinawa (close to Ishigaki), but really 16 kilometers is not much. At least they're not calling it a 'desert'.

I meant to add -- the hot springs in Tottori, and the crab if you're into the kani tours and what not, are the REAL reason to visit the place. Make the dunes a little detour for a couple of hours.

Are these the dunes where they made it illegal to make messages in the sand because they were too graphic? :-)

My old home! I used to live across the street. Fun times! The camels were my neighbors...
