Traditional firefighters

A traditional firefighting demonstration is held during the opening ceremony of the Tokyo International Fire and Safety Exhibition 2008 at Tokyo Big Sight on Thursday. Admission to the event, which runs through Sunday, is free but registration is required at the venue. About 100,000 people are are expected to visit, the organizer said.

    I respect the traditions but this pic is rather too scary, ofcourse it has to be free, even if they pay me for a visit i will refuse.

    Exactly how is holding a prone man aloft on a long stick supposed to fight fire? By distracting it?

    I'm confused as to how one would go about fighting a fire in this manner. Maybe they loft the guy on the pole onto a burning roof to smother the fire?
