Otaki firefighters control access to a road leading to Mount Ontake, background right, as it continues to erupt Sunday. Mount Ontake in central Japan erupted shortly before noon Saturday, catching mountain climbers by surprise and injuring at least 34, including 12 seriously, according to Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Seeing as seismic activity was being observed from Spetember 10th, perhaps the authorities would have been wise to act on it and prevented this tragedy. Afterall, some mountains are closed to climbers during the winter because of... snow. A preventable tragedy.

Do the firefighters have authority to stop people trying to enter the area? I'm thinking of heading down through the week to get some mad shots. Here's hoping the 12 injured folk will pull through.
